#1 Miss LuLu White’s Red Hot Creole Jazz Band at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 - Making its first ever visit to Britain, this band plays authentic black jazz from the 1920s, the music associated with King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Williams and their contemporaries. Leadre Mart Mous van Baarle is joined by Tom Goosen (cornet); Wil van Baarle (clarinet, alto sax); Bart Goosen (trombone); Mart Jacobs (piano); Wouter Nouwens (banjo, dobro); Marcel van de Winkel (sousaphone) and German expatriate Matthias Seuffert (clarinet, alto sax). Reviewing one of their CDs recently in “Just Jazz” magazine, Brian Harvey hailed them as “one of the most fun bands I’ve heard in ages. #2 Father Mike’s Hot Six 2003 at Bude International Jazz Festival – This fine New Orleans’s style band was formed several years ago by banjoist, vocalist and raconteur “Father” Mike Lewis, formerly co-leader of the of the Panama Jazz Kings. He is joined by another PHK member, the exciting trumpeter John Pritchard, whose influences include Kid Thomas Valentine and De De Pierce. Completing the line-up are Stan Thomas (reeds); George Stacey (trombone); Martin Gough (bass); Pete Winter-Hart (drums). Based in South Devon, the Hot Six’s busy schedule includes monthly sessions at both the Double Locks Hotel, Exeter and the Ivy House Hotel, Teingmouth. #3 Andor’s Jazz Band (Holland) – This stunning 9 piece classic style jazz band was launched in 1978 to re-create the wonderful jazz and hot dance music of the 1920’s that swept across America. The musicians are: Ad Houtepen (cornet, reeds, vocals); Peter Iwen (cornet); Victor Bronsgeest (trombone, vocals); Robert Veen (reeds); Hans Bosch (reeds); Hans Koppes (sousaphone); Johan Lammers (banjo, guitar); Louis Debji (drums); Andor Lukacs (piano). #5 Alice Penrose Band at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 - Returning to Bude by demand following an impressive debut last year, this band is led by 17-year old trumpeter Alice Penrose, a sensitive and melodic player with phrasing reminiscent of the legendary Bunk Johnson. Alongside her is another impressive new recruit to the jazz scene, Deborah Stanley (alto and soprano saxes): a classically trained flautist, her alto playing reflects the inspiration of Capt. John Handy. The driving young New Orleans style trombonist Tom Wittinham completes the front line. #6 Ken Ingram’s New Creole Jazz Band at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – Legendary cornettist Ken Ingram made an unforgettable impact in 1996 when he launched the “Lincoln Gardens Jazz Band”. The band celebrated the music of King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band, as does his New Creole Jazz Band, whose triumphant public debut came at the start of 2001. Once again Chris Mercer (cornet) is teamed up with Ken, but, unlike the Lincoln Gardens Jazz Band, this unit is a regular working unit playing jazz venues round the UK. Completing the line-up are Phil Wall (clarinet); Dave Braidley (trombone); Griff Thomas (banjo); Dave Andrews (drums); and Bill Bickerton (piano). #7 Black Snake Jazz Band at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – Originally from South Wales, Mike Cox (banjo and vocals) spent many years in North America where he led the hugely successful Grand Dominion Jazz Band. He returned to Britain some years ago, since when he has launched the storming Black Snake Jazz Band. This fine New Orleans style band brings together six other superb musicians. They are Alan Potton (cornet); John Maddocks (clarinet, alto sax); Dave Donohoe (trombone, vocals); Des Bacon (piano); Bill Cole (bass); Colin Bowden (drums). #8 Savannah Jazz Band at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – This fine, driving band from Yorkshire was founded in1979 and still delights its home audience at the Station Tavern, Huddersfield with regular sessions. However, for many years now, their fame has been spreading and they now play frequently at Jazz Festivals throughout Britain, Europe and more recently in North America. They re-create the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Bunk Johnson and many others. The band’s line-up is Geoff Wilde (cornet, vocals); Gabe Essien (clarinet, vocals); Brian (Sam) Ellis (trombone); Tony Pollitt (bass); Jackie Cooper (banjo); John Meehan (drums). #9 Bob Dwyer’s Hot Seven at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 - formed in 1996, this is one of London’s finest bands, presenting authentic classic jazz in a lively and entertaining way. Leader Bob Dwyer (trombone) shows mastery not only of New Orleans tailgate but also of the later “Bixieland” styles. The influence of Johnny Dodds is clear in the fiery playing of Bernard Stutt (clarinet), while the fine trumpeter Malcolm Walton is inspired by both Bix and Louis. The rhythm section consists of John Bayne (bass and bass sax); Geoff Over (banjo, guitar); Jon Penn (piano); John Hall (drums). #10 Charleston Chasers (1) at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 - Originally formed in 1987, the “Chasers” have grown steadily in stature to become Britain’s outstanding purveyors of the hot dance music of the 1920s. A regular major attraction at theatres and concert halls throughout Britain, no other band captures the spirit of the art deco era in quite the same way. Leader Sean Bolan (cornet) is joined by Peter Rudeforth (trumpet); Steve Shaw (trombone); Robert Fowler, Olly Wilby and Luke Annersley (reeds); Raina Reid (piano & vocals), Martin Wheatley (banjo, guitar); Paul Moylan (bass); and Debbie Arthurs (percussion and vocals). #12 Keith Nichols’ Blue Devils Orchestra in “Drop Me Off in Harlem” at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – This magnificent ten-piece vintage jazz orchestra was formerly known as the Cotton Club Orchestra. Keith Nichols (piano, vocals) leads Enrico Tomasso and Mike Henry (trumpets); James Evans, Alan Barnes and Matthias Seuffert (reeds); Adrian Fry (trombone); Martin Wheatley (banjo, guitar); Jim Ydstie (bass); Richard Pite (drums). Together they specialise in that unique era of big band jazz that began in the mid-1920s and ended in the 1940s – the wonderful music associated with Fletcher Henderson, Cab Calloway, Benny Moten and the early Duke Ellington.The Orchestra is joined by charismatic vocalist Joan Viskant. #14 Hokum at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – Hokum is a brand new band being launched at the Festival by Bill Posters cornettist and front man Megs Eterington. The band excels in recreating jazz classics from the first half of the Twentieth Century – jazz’s formative period. The Band is joined by charismatic vocalist Joan Viskant. #17 New Dixieland Five at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – This fascinating and exhilarating band first emerged at the 1995 Bude Jazz Festival as the Original Syncopation Jass Band. Vintage jazz buff Phil Bennett hand-picked a line-up that could bring back life to the music of the legendary Original Dixieland Jazz Band – Norman Field (clarinet); Christine Woodcock (trombone); John Pickett (cornet); Jon Penn (piano) and Nick Ward (drums). The band attracted thunderous applause and returned the following year to a similar reception. Subsequently it was renamed the New Dixieland Five and in 1999 it took the U.S. by storm. #19 Jon Penn’s New Classic Jazz Band at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – In 1968 pianist Jon Penn started his jazz career in the English Midlands with Ken Ingram’s Society Syncopators. After moving to North Wales in 1973, he joined the Severnside Jazzmen and in 1993 he joined the Ben Cohen Hot Five for their debut and continued to play with the Ben Cohen Hot 5 and 7 until the latter’s sad death in 2002. Jon returns to Bude for another busy week, including the launch of his New Classic Jazz Band in which he is joined by Megs Etherington (cornet); Norman Field (reeds); Derek Halford (trombone); Dennis Mowatt (banjo); Terry McGarth (sousaphone); Nick Ward (drums); Sheila Fawkes (vocals) and special guest Matthias Seuffert (reeds). #20 Henry’s Bootblacks 2003 at Bude International Jazz Festival – This astonishing 10-piece classic jazz orchestra was initially launched in Bristol by pianist, trumpeter, vocalist and arranger Henry Davies as long ago as 1964. Since then it has achieved near legendary status, enabling Henry to attract many of Britain’s finest jazz musicians to join him in re-creating the music of early Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson etc. At Bude this year he will feature Enrico Tomasso and Ceri Williams (trumpets); Matthias Seuffert, John Hallam, Hugh Roberts (reeds); Steve Davis (Sousaphone); Joe Farier (banjo, guitar), Tom Wittingham (drums) and special guest Jim Fryer on trombone. #21 Alice’s Wonderland Band 2003at Bude International Jazz Festival – Returning with her unique blend of classic jazz, hot dance music and comedy, the Wonderland Band’s leader writes “Alice’s Band are back again/ And Alice is thrilled to bits/ She says it’s great to know/ we’re not in this year’s obits!/ The band is the same/ And as tuneful as ever/ Joined on drums again,/ By Our Big Trevor. With oyur Dad, Our Littleun’/ Roger and Hugh/ They’ll entertain you again/ As they usually do.” Put another way, it’s winning team of Trevor Powell (drums); Clive Wittingham (cornet); Tom Wittingham (trombone, euphonium, penny whistle); Roger White (bass); Hugh Roberts (reeds); Henry Davies (piano) and “Alice” Jill Whittingham (banjo, vocals and poetic outbursts)! #22 Art Deco Four at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – Leader Steve Chisholm (vocals, cornet, trombone) has long been known to Bude audiences as the superb 1920s and 30s style crooner and instrumentalist with Doctor Jazz and Pennies from Devon. More recently he formed the Art Deco Blue Four to play the music from this era associated with such luminaries as Bing Crosby, Al Bowlly and Red Nichols. A frequent star attraction at the legendary Art Deco hotel on Burgh Island, Steve is joined at Bude by his regular saxophonist Trevor Hunt and two other fine musicians in the style from further afield, John Bayne (bass and bass saxophone) and Spats Langham (Banjo, guitar, vocals). #24 Fryer-Barnhart International All Stars (USA/UK) at Bude International Jazz Festival 2003 – Launched at the 1998 Keswick Jazz Festival, this band caused an instant sensation and it has attracted an equally rapturious reception everywhere it has played since. The band brings together two American stars, Jim Fryer (trombone) and Jeff Barnhart (piano and vocals), with the cream of British jazz musicians: Gordon Whitworth (trumpet, vocals); George Huxley (reeds); Nick Ward (drums); Annie Hawkins (bass) and Brian Mellor (banjo, guitar, vocals). #17 Phil Wall’s Jazz Cardinals at Bude International Jazz Festival 2004 - Formed early in 2002. The Jazz Cardinals hail from South Wales and include several members of the well established East Street Owls. They play a fascinating selection of material, ranging from early ragtime to music of the classic bands of the 1920s and early 30s, particularly those featuring Johnny Dodds. The usual line-up includes a reed section of Phil Wall and Bob Gribble (inc. vocals); Norman Thatcher (cornet); Sarah Thatcher (banjo and tenor guitar); Sam Sims (guitar, mandolin, Hawaiian guitar); Vic Partridge (bass); Tony Quinn (washboard and percussion). Des Bacon’s Red Hot Syncopators – Des Bacon (piano, reeds) has been a major figure on the British Jazz scene since the 1950s, when he was recruited by Mike Daniels to play with his famous Delta Jazzmen. The impressive new Red Hot Syncopators from Somerset bring together the best elements of previous bands, combining the flexibility of a small bans with the ability to deliver, when required, tight and forceful arrangements. Joining Des are Steve Graham (trumpet), Paul Munnery (trombone), Arthur Vincent (reeds), John Wurr (reeds), Malcolm Hurrell (banjo, guitar), Richard Willey (sousaphone), and Roger Wells (drums) with special guest & sound-man Pen Pengelly on E flat clarinet

Mississippi Joymakers – the band came together in the mid 1990s to play old style New Orleans Jazz, they range from Sam Morgan to George Lewis via The Halfway House Orchestra. The band is led by festival organiser par excellence John Minnion (cornet) with Chris Pearce (reeds), Dion Cochrane (drums), Tony Sharp (bass), Bill Scott (banjo), and Stan Stephens (trombone).

Savoy Orphans – Formed in 1996 by Megs Etherington (cornet, vocals) in Sussex. Megs is well known as the leader of comedy band “Bill Posters Will Be Band”. He is joined by Chris Newman (piano), Steve Davis (sousaphone). Guest reeds players are Martin Butterworth or Norman Field. They will be augmented by Nick Ward (drums), and Megs daughter Zoe Lambeth (reeds). They are also joined by Czech vocalist Petra Ernyeiova who in the following year returned with her own band The Czech Mates.
